Desert Dwelling Design Week

My Space

Mark de Denus spent 35 years as a zookeeper, nine of them at Tucson's Reid Park Zoo, before retiring to Winnipeg. Each winter he returns to Tucson for two months from Halloween to December to hang the zoo lights. It's a seven-day, 70-hour-a-week job that sees him negotiating with the public as well as the animals.

In this 3 Story short, Mark explains how this unique calling came about.  Interview and photos by Gillian Drummond. Video by Ricardo Bracamonte.

* Visit the Reid Park Zoo Lights nightly starting December 5th, 6pm to 8pm.
