Interior designers share their design secrets at an upcoming three-day event in Tucson.

Does trying to choose paint colors for your home make you want to throw all of the paint samples you’ve collected in the trash and just paint your whole house white? Are you ready to expand your living space outside and enjoy Tucson’s wonderful weather (almost) all year round? Do you want to remodel your tiny bathroom to make it bigger, but you can’t knock out any walls?

These are just of a few of the questions that professional interior designers will be answering at Tucson’s upcoming Desert Dwelling Design Week, which is sponsored by the Arizona South Chapter of the American Society of Interior Designers and Tucson Lifestyle Home & Garden magazine. This three-day event, to be held February 28th to March 2nd, will feature informative panel discussions, design demonstrations and a talk on kitchen remodeling and kitchen design trends by Roger Hazard, the well known designer and star of  Sell This House and Roger That!.

An all-day “Industry Trade Expo” on March 1st will let the public into the interior designer's world. One way interior designers develop their creative ideas is by working with local and national vendors who are up on the latest design trends and cutting-edge products. Bring your questions, see many products that are typically available “to the trade only” and take home ideas for your personal design project at the free “Secrets and Sources: Industry Trade Expo.”

Designers don’t just purchase and design with fabulous furniture, expensive fabrics and one-of-a-kind creations, they often end up with client returns, showroom extras and pieces with minor imperfections. The all-day “Designer Warehouse Sale,” also on March 1st, is a chance to find designer treasures at bargain prices. Everything will be sold on a cash-only, first-come, first-served basis, so don’t be late to this free event.

If you’re thinking of remodeling your home, you shouldn’t believe everything you see on TV. The “Reality Remodeling” panel discussion will bring together five of Tucson’s top interior designers to address the real-life pitfalls and successes of home remodeling. Will your project increase the value of your home for resale? Are big-ticket items worth the investment? How can small projects reap big returns? These are some of the questions this insightful panel will cover.

One TV interior designer really worth listening to is the celebrity designer and home-stager Roger Hazard, who is best known for his Emmy-nominated series Sell This House.

“I’m really looking forward to Roger’s presentation on kitchen renovation and remodeling,” says Sally Chavez, ASID, the event chairperson. “He’ll be talking about hot trends, new products and how to personalize your kitchen,” she adds.

Hazard’s “Kitchen Trends” presentation will be held at a local kitchen showroom where you also can meet product representatives and discover which products will best meet your design needs.

When it’s time to call in a professional interior designer, where do you start? If you haven’t worked with an interior designer before, “Demystifying Design” is the event for you. A panel of five of Tucson’s top interior designers will discuss how to work with an interior designer and how using a designer can help you achieve your design goals while saving you both time and money.

Additional design events include “Bath Trends: Minimalist Space Design,” “Art & Interiors,” “The Developing Nature of Working at Home” and “Home Technology Trends: Simplifying the Smart House.” “Outdoor Living, Under the Stars,” an evening event to be held at a beautiful Pima Canyon home, will cover landscape design, cutting-edge LED lighting and outdoor furniture.

As Jan O’Brien, the chapter president of ASID – Arizona South, says, “Tucson has a wealth of interior design resources, and Desert Dwelling Design Week is a chance for southern Arizonans to discover new design trends and innovative products for desert living. The event also is an opportunity for homeowners to learn about the realities of home remodeling and the practicalities of working with interior designers.”
